Hi

I was just wondering if the results for the annual wedding album competition had been posted up anywhere?

Thanks

I think you're right, Shazz. In fact I believe he won both album awards. However, I've been trying to find out if it's possible to get a score on your own entry in the album comps (I entered for the feedback not in expectation of glory!)

It would also be great, if it's feasible practically and legally, etc, to see a few shots of the winning album as an inspiration

I was wondering too if the winner's work was listed on this site. Would be nice to see the winning work. Everything else seems to be?

Seriously. I've been trying to get these results for over a month. When I called last week, they said they would be posted on the site by the end of the week. Don't hold your breath. This is the first year they've run this competition and evidently they didn't give it much thought. The biggest let down in my option is that a JUDGE actually won the overall competition. Talk about a conflict of interest. I see that happens in the print competitions too. I think it's absolutely disgusting. There should be an independent category for judges! We can only suppose that the judges chosen are the cream of the crop, so why should everyone else be competing against them? Do your 8 years olds compete against your uni students on tests? Honestly....  I'm going to call again next week on these album results and bug SWPP until they want to PUKE out my results!) (Am a little frustrated?Huh?)

I had 3 entries in the album competition (at £10 per entry) and I entered 4 categories of the 16 x 20 print competition (also £10 per entry). Because I paid for the return of the prints I found my marks on the back of each one, but for an outlay of £70 (which is of course in addition to the yearly subscription fee) I was expecting to receive the marks for my albums too. As for the point about the judges, well this must be the only competition where judges or anyone associated with the organisation of the competition are not automatically ineligible to enter. I have to admit, I sometimes wonder if the members are here for the benefit of the SWPP and not the other way round. (equally frustrated  Huh?)

A judge should NEVER be able to enter ANY competition, how on earth was and is that allowed to happen? I have often wondered about the monthly comps often seeing so many of the same names and type of shots winning golds. Paying to enter a competition is bad enough, but finding the judge won - thats something else!

How do you become a judge again Huh?  Grin

It's very easy to become defensive, attacking and angry over any competition - it's much harder to be humble and to learn from the experience .... and having adopted that humility we give ourselves the privileged position of growing and developing.

Zoe, I think the grouse some of us have is nothing to do with not winning, it's the fact that entering was pointless and expensive, because it's impossible to learn from the process if

(a) you can't see the winning entries and

(b) you don't even get a score

I know I only entered to get an idea of how good my albums were by some agreed national standard. I knew I couldn't win.

Personally, I never thought of this point, but if judges are actually able to enter (I've no idea if that is true) that would also be a fair grouse. If certain people set the standard internationally, it's pretty likely they will most competitions anyway, but if some of those people do the judging as well, they may as well just get the award automatically year and year about!!

All I am asking for is to know my score and to see some winning entries, in exchange for £30 of entry fees

I didn’t enter so not personally affected but I think all you can learn from a judge winning a competition is that it’s not a fair game.

Pete, I don't know that competitions are the right place for the process you describe, that's what I see mentoring to be for - although I agree that it is great to see the winning entry so you know what has won and why - and seeing that might also alleviate any unhappiness with a judge winning.

On the issue of judges not being able to win competitions, there will always be arguments against it - if you don't like the situation, work hard to get up there as a Fellow and be recognised as a judge ... and then change the system!  Trouble is, there may well not be many people wanting to judge when they lose the opportunity to gain regional, national and international acknowledgement for the quality of their work.

The issue I have a problem with is how the industry is dominated by men at the top - the only way I can change that as a woman is to be a woman who is prepared to work hard to break through the glass ceiling, and then to hold out a hand to other women to come along and join me.  I believe strongly that society in general, and organisations such as the SWPP, BIPP and MPA can benefit from more women pushing themselves forward so that we have a balanced perspective on what happens in the future.

Zoe - You sound just like Ms Harriet Harman, man hating, downgrading the men in society, what right has a woman to gain anything just because of her gender.

Women have more rights if you care to look in this country than I've ever known..........Equality........tosh. If you have the ability/talent you should be on an equal footing.....especially in Photography where a white middle aged man with a camera is now seen as a paedophile by so many women.

Minister for Women.............Minister for Men??...........gone fishing!!!

Give me men bosses any day.......society is turning into a women run nightmare!! And I'm a woman who likes the male gender.

One of the  biggest threats to our society is Management Consultants...destroying once fabulous companies........I've been there, seen a great company torn apart by these people........

Cheers

Julia

Well!

Think Zoe just said in a roundabout way she'd like to see a few more women at the top for a more balanced perspective. Nothing wrong with that surely.
