Hi Barney
Only the organisation you are working/volunteering for can get a CRB done for you. so for example if you are working in a school, the school would need to have the check done for you, you cannot get one for yourself. The reality is you will not need one for your photography, and if an organisation insists that you have one, then they will need to have one done for you.
I have two at the moment, one was done by a charity who work with young offenders, and the other was done by my church as part of our child protection policy.
God bless Dave

Myunderstanding is the same as that of Dave - someone has to do the check on you (I have one instigated by local health authority as I do some voluntary work with them). Have heard something about about "umbrella organisations" who will make a check for you for a fee, - perhaps someone else can shed light on these?

* Can I use an Umbrella Body to get a CRB check on myself? * No, unless you are applying to join an Agency who will place you in jobs. No self employed people can get a CRB check at the moment. What you can get is a 'Subject Access' Hope this helps. Colin

Thanks for your comments - i was wondering weather the SWPP was an umbrella body who could do this. I have spoken to a youth organisation whom I help and they are going to do one for me Hi Barney I don't wish to deliberately confuse the issue, but I think that all that will do is cover your youth organisation whilst you are working for them. God bless Dave

I believe that to be correct also. It won't cover you for any other jobs

Barney, is there a specific job that you need the CRB check for? The people requesting the check are the best people to apply for one, and in fact that is really the only way the system can begin to become a useful safety net.
If it is just for general marketing that you have CRB clearance then I doubt it is worth the £50 to get it done. I know I have it in my FAQ, but only because I had the Scottish equivalent anyway in my previous role as a nurse. I certainly wont be paying to redo it, even if I could.

Thanks for all your comments - I think I understand the process a little more now and have read a little more on the web. I have got myself into so school PR work as well as a few school proms (which they dont mind if you dont have CRB - Just a nice thing to say you have) aside from that it's just for reassuring parents when i photograph there kids - just to drop it into a conversation. Thanks again - Sorted now

Barney,
There are 3 levels of CRB check that can be performed on a person.
The lowest level you can do yourself, and is called Basic Disclosure. All it says is if you have a criminal record (and Long Haired Lover from Liverpool by Little Jimmy Osmond doesn't count - thankfully). Costs £20.
The next two levels have to be applied for by the organisation you are working for. The higher of these is called Enhanced disclosure and includes searches of the relevant databases to show if you banned from working with Children / Vulnerable Adults etc. I've had god knows how many of these done in the past from my connection with the Scout Association, Schools etc. The reason for so many is that they are not transferrable between organisations - each has to do a seperate search - stupid I know!
regards
Mike
